Dr. Myers graduated from Colombia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his residency at the Northwestern University School of Medicine where he remains on their faculty.
On Faculty of the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University
He has been a faculty member at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine where he has taught and mentored residents in cataract surgery for over 30 years. He was named Teacher of the Year 3 straight years in the Northwestern Ophthalmology program. Dr Myers established a Resident Education fund at Northwestern making a major donation to promote resident learning. He has been a lead speaker at the annual Resident Phacoemulsification Course at Northwestern since its inception, giving him exposure to the other best surgical teachers in the Chicago.
Dr. Myers created the Northwestern Ophthalmology Ambulatory Surgery Mentorship Program in 2002. He has trained over 30 resident ophthalmologists in surgical center performed procedures.
He currently does research in the field of ophthalmic pharmacology having introduced dropless dilation techniques to cataract surgery in the United States. Now, most patients do not need to use any drops prior to or after their cataract surgery.
Dr Myers has been the creator and primary instructor in an international course on intraocular medications at the ASCRS and AAO annual meetings, ophthalmology’s largest organized groups, for the last several years.
Private Practice of Medicine
He was President of Myers Center for the Eye and Evanston Ophthalmologists, S.C. Dr. Myers has practiced in Evanston and Skokie, Illinois for over 30 years. Doing hundreds of procedures a year has earned him a spot on the list of Top Doctors for over 10 years. He has focused on common and complex cataracts and refractive surgery in addition to maintaining a general ophthalmologic practice. He was one of the first ophthalmologists in the area to utilize topical “eye drop” anesthesia in 1992 and then intracameral dilation beginning in 2003. He is a propenent of dropless cataract surgery, relieving most patients from the task of administering their own drops. He is the lead instructor at the annual ASCRS and American Academy of Ophthalmology courses on intracameral (inside the eye) agents for anterior segment surgery, featuring leading international ophthalmic researchers from 4 continents.
Dr Myers has performed more than 3000 cataract surgeries. He is an active member and part owner of Northshore Same Day Surgery Center in Lincolnwood, where he performs most of his cataract procedures.
He was instrumental in getting a femtosecond cataract laser at the Center.
He is comfortable offering patients traditional or laser surgery, but after completing certification on the LenSx femtosecond laser, he still prefers the surgical feel of manual self-performed surgery.
On a Personal Note
Dr Myers lives in Chicago with his wife Lisa and dog, Sookie a Grand Champion Bearded Collie. He has two daughters, Darienne a PhD candidate at the UCSF Immunology Program and Jenna, an admissions officer at her alma mater, Bryn Mawr College.
