The Tecnis IOL was developed by Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. (AMO) using wavefront analysis of human corneas. Tecnis first gained FDA-approval in early 2009 as a new IOL that gives cataract surgery patients, with or without presbyopia, superior near and reading vision. Tecnis Multifocal is inserted into the eye during small-incision, phacoemulsification cataract surgery or laser cataract surgery, during which the eye's natural lens is extracted. The Tecnis lens is made of flexible materials, which allows Dr. Sondheimer to fold the lens prior to insertion and place it inside the eye using the same small incision created to remove the natural lens. After the insertion, the new lens gently unfolds within the eye, and its supporting arms (haptics) allow for proper positioning. In addition to providing Chicago IOL patients with improved multi-distance vision, Tecnis Multifocal also incorporates "intelligent asphericity" to correct most corneal spherical aberrations.

According to AMO clinical trials of Tecnis, participants reported the following benefits:

88 percent of patients who received Tecnis Multifocal IOLs were completely independent from glasses and contact lenses four to six months following surgery.
97 percent of patients had uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better within four to six months after receiving Tecnis lenses.
12 months after surgery, 95 percent of patients said they would choose Tecnis again over any other lens implant.
