What is LASIK? LASIK, an acronym for Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis, is one type of laser eye surgery. Who performs LASIK? Most often LASIK is performed by a board-certified ophthalmologist. What happens during the procedure? The procedure starts with the surgeon creating a corneal flap. The flap is then folded back, and the then the laser ablates the corneal tissue in order to change its shape. After the excimer laser is used, the flap is carefully folded back in place. There are two options to create the corneal flap, a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser.
